Energy Efficiency

The aim of the Energy Efficiency Directive is to establish a common framework of measures for the promotion of energy efficiency within the Union in order to ensure the achievement of the Union’s 2020 20 % headline target on energy efficiency and to pave the way for further energy efficiency improvements beyond that date. It lays down rules designed to remove barriers in the energy market and overcome market failures that impede efficiency in the supply and use of energy, and provides for the establishment of indicative national energy efficiency targets for 2020.

The European Strategic Energy Technology (SET)-Plan aims to transform energy production and use in the EU with the goal of achieving EU worldwide leadership in the production of energy technological solutions capable of delivering EU 2020 and 2050 targets. The move towards a low-carbon Europe requires innovative research, effective strategic planning and an emphasis on timely and appropriate action.

The European Electricity Grid Initiative (EEGI) is one of the European Industrial Initiatives under the Strategic Energy Technologies Plan (SET-PLAN) and proposes a 9-year European research, development and demonstration (RD&D) programme to accelerate innovation and the development of the electricity networks of the future in Europe. The programme focuses on system innovation rather than on technology innovation, and addresses the challenge of integrating new technologies under real life working conditions and validating the results.

Europe's Energy Portal utilizes the leverage of European consumers. The end-user of energy, both the domestic and the industrial, is the prime source of input to our data analysis.
